Jabberwocky

Description

A dark, surreal, and deeply atmospheric series of editorial illustrations based on Lewis Carroll’s famous nonsense poem, “Jabberwocky”. The project visually translates the uncanny, dreamlike, and menacing world of the poem, focusing on the psychological tension between the monstrous unknown and the heroic quest hidden within the text.

As the Illustrator and Art Director, I developed a striking visual narrative defined by a powerful, high-contrast aesthetic. Using a meticulous scratchboard and etching-inspired style, the artwork plays heavily with deep shadows and organic, unsettling textures to bring the mythical beast and the eerie “tulgey wood” to life. The composition balances classical fairy-tale dark romanticism with a modern, avant-garde editorial layout. This includes custom typography that mirrors the sharp, fractured nature of the poem’s invented language, resulting in a cohesive series designed for a premium, collector’s edition poetry publication.
